Nets' playmaking rookie showcases flashes of Spurs' HOFer

NBA.com

The Nets knocked off the Suns in the second game of the China Games in Macao, 111-109.

Cam Thomas led all scorers with 16 points in 26 minutes, but that was hardly the story of the contest.

Brooklyn may have selected five rookies in the first round of the 2025 NBA draft, but an unlikely candidate has emerged as potentially the most impactful of them all.

This 19-year-old has a wealth of experience playing professionally in the Israeli league. He also dons Luka Doncic's No. 77 as he aims to emulate the Slovenian-born great.

Ben Saraf, who was a polarizing pick among the Nets fan base, is showing major signs of emulating another European-born great, Manu Ginobili.

The left-handed combo guard plays with great pace, and court vision. His 11 assists led all players on Sunday.

At 6-foot-6, his length is a major advantage in the paint against smaller guards. While Saraf finished with just four points on 2-of-5 shooting, his selfishness in finding the open man is eye-opening.

It might be premature to compare this teenager to a Hall of Fame. Argentinian-born great, but he certainly impressed in his young Nets career.

Nets' Owner, Coach, send mixed messages on tanking plans

NBA.com

Any organization needs full alignment and a shared vision starting at the top of the organization on down to the players.

It should comes as no surprise that a rudderless organization for the better part of its existence is having trouble getting on the same page.

Speaking with Brian Lewis of the New York Post, Nets owner Joe Tsai shared a few concise, but direct thoughts on the upcoming season.

After a 2024-25 campaign where the Nets did not truly tank and drew the eight spot in the NBA Draft Lottery, it seems that the plan is clear.

Well, maybe to everyone but head coach, Jordi Fernandez.

The Nets overachieved under Fernandez last season until ill-fated injuries became just too much to overcome.

Brooklyn is expected to be among the NBA's bottom feeders, but an interesting dynamic will play out between the culture building and compete to the last whistle Fernandez, and the star-starved owner and front office that wants that next marquee young player to land in Brooklyn.

While Tsai is not alone by declaring his team's intention to have one eye on the NBA Draft Lottery and tank,  his comments are likely fine-worthy as it flies in the face of the competitive landscape Adam Silver is trying to create.

Perhaps Fernandez is trying to cover for his owner, but it's also possible the young coach loves taking on an immense challenge of taking a roster bereft of top tier talent and playoff experience into league relevance.

Even large portions of the Nets fan base will root for losses to endure short-term pain for long-term gain. What Tsai and Marks may have overlooked is that folding is not in Fernandez's DNA.

Good luck tanking with a coach that doesn't seem to be fully onboard with the marching orders from up top.

Cam Thomas sends early message to Nets front office

Cam Thomas bet on himself this off-season and early returns are promising.

The Nets young shooting guard, who was in a contract standoff with the Nets front office, made a major statement during the NBA's China games in Macao

Thomas started the game 6-6 with 14 points in the first quarter. He finished with 22 points on 7-12 from the field and led the team in assists with six in just 24 minutes.

Jordi Fernandez wanted to see more playmaking and sharing the ball from the pure scorer and his preseason debut far exceeded those expectations.

If Thomas keeps this type of performance up throughout the season, he'll likely go to the highest bidder. Beyond improving his passing and defense, Thomas will need to prove that he can stay healthy and on the court night in and night out.

If Thomas can check all those boxes, it might really be his Last Dance here in Brooklyn.

The Nets were defeated by the Suns in OT, 132-127.

Giannis confirms rumors linking him to Brooklyn, others

 Giannis Antetokounmpo is a Buck.

 For now.

Speaking with Dario Melendez of WISN 12 News in Milwaukee and other beat reporters, The Greek Freak didn't exactly dismiss all of the juicy rumors that indicated the superstar's interest in playing outside Milwaukee if the organization can't compete for a title.

The Nets were one of several teams linked to Giannis, with many disregarding the trade rumors as ludicrous.

Clearly, Giannis is still committed to the Bucks, but if things go sideways for the organization yet again this upcoming year, the trade talks will only intensify at the deadline and really heat up in the summer.

Nets fading into NBA obscurity

Brooklyn is not the center of the NBA universe. In fact, the Nets are an afterthought in their own media market.

While James Dolan's Knicks making a strong push for another title run, the Nets are simply trying to find their way.

With a trio of rookies providing potential upside in Noah Traore, Egor Demin, Ben Saraf, the promise for a bright future is far from guaranteed.

The Nets have a likely deadend leading scorer in Cam Thomas, who is back on the qualifying offer and likely in his last dance scenario in New York.

Meanwhile, another scoring guard in Michael Porter Jr. is making headlines for controversial and clearly braindead arguments online.

The Nets don't have a superstar player to boast and they're forcing Thomas out, while propping up Porter Jr. as a franchise savior and potential NBA scoring leader.

Some may call it wishful thinking. I call it delusional. The Nets are not just watch TV. In fact, they have one nationally televised game all season, and rightfully so.

Other than the development of their rookies and scoring flashes from two players not part of the team's long-term plans, there's not a heck of a lot to get excited about in Brooklyn this upcoming season.

Pistons motor over Nets 113-98

The Brooklyn Nets were no match for the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night as they suffered a 15-point loss as they continue to battle injuries.

Noah Clowney had a career night with 29 points, six rebounds and three assists while five other Nets reached double figures in scoring.

Brooklyn committed 15 costly turnovers and allowed Detroit to pile up 54 points in the paint.

Michael Beasley led the way for Detroit with 23, who moved to above the .500 mark for the first time all season.

The Nets, meanwhile, are a sinking ship that is  heading quickly toward the, NBA draft lottery with many veterans out due to injury.

Even Jordi Fernandez's superb coaching can't compensate for the talent deficit the team is facing right now. With many players still a ways away from being healthy, things may get worse before they get better for Brooklyn.

Nets GM panic selling in Schröder trade to GS

The Brooklyn Nets were winning too many games.

That was the concern general manager Sean Marks had when he moved point guard Dennis Schröder and a future second round pick acquired from Miami, for two-second round picks, De'Anthony Melton and Reece Beekman.

Sitting at a record of 10-15 entering the start of the week, Jordi Fernandez's crew was sitting pretty in the play--in position.

Meanwhile, Marks, has become enamored with the 2025 draft class, including multiple scouting trips to New Brunswick to evaluate top prospects, Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey from Rutgers.

Many half-witted fans on social media applauded the move by Marks in a not so subtle attempt to tank the season.

By simply trading the Nets emotional leader and leader of the offense, Marks is aiming to position this team for a good chance at a top three to five pick.

The reality is the NBA draft lottery is a different system from that of the NFL, where in football it behooves teams to tank and lose games for the number one overall pick. In 2019, the NBA draft lottery was tweaked to flatten out the odds for the three worst teams.

The Nets currently have eight teams with a worse record than them in the NBA, and will be a long shot to get a top three pick or even land within the top five.

Those same fans celebrating Marks's move in a premature sell job, were the same ones months ago and over the last few years calling for his firing.

At the end of the day, Marks could have held out to the trade deadline to higher the asking price for some of his valuable vets and capitalize on desperate teams looking to improve on the margins.

There's a reason why 99 percent of teams wait until right before the trade deadline to sell and buy.

At the of the day, Marks felt strongly that this current roster and group of veterans can compete for a playoff spot, and wanted to cut the head off the snake before he had a tougher decision to make at the deadline.

Now, Nets World is hoping that the ping pong balls bounce their way as they are likely flushing down a potential playoff season.

More vets will be on the move before the trade deadline, with Schröder being the first domino to fall.

Nets, NBA Hall of Famer among ten limited partners in this NFL team

The New Jersey Nets era of basketball is one that is often forgotten. While the Brooklyn Nets have been in existence since 2012, when the franchise called New Jersey home for 35 seasons, there were plenty of historic moments.

From consecutive NBA Finals appearances in 2002 and 2003, to a litany of All Stars that called the Garden State home, it is truly a remarkable run in the franchise's history.

Now, one of the most reveled names in Nets history is becoming part of an ownership group with the Buffalo Bills.

This former player was recently named a NBA Hall of Famer this past summer and he will be inducted into the Nets Hall of Fame on January 25.

Vince Carter joins Tracy McGrady and eight others as limited partners in the Bills ownership group.

Carter was one of the most dynamic and electrifying players of his generation, and now he's using his generational wealth to get into the NFL ownership game.

Carter is a analyst on YES Network and still present around the Nets, but this is just another notch in the belt of an all-time basketball great.

Net reveals he doesn't have social media

Social media has become synonymous with everyday life, and in particular the sports world.

So as we approach the start of 2025, it's surprising to hear that a sports professional doesn't have a social media platform.

Now add to that equation someone that is in the largest media market in the country in New York.

Well, there is one member of the Brooklyn Nets who you won't be able find on any social media platforms.

It's not any player on the roster, but head coach Jordi Fernandez.

Perhaps staying out of the online media swarm is good for the first year coach, whether he's being praised or criticized.

The Nets snapped a three-game skid with a convincing 99-90 win over Indiana and will have a few days off before taking on Milwaukee on Sunday.

Former Nets coach beats out Jordi Fernandez for this award

Jordi Fernandez has been tremendous for the Brooklyn Nets this year. The fact that the Nets are within striking distance of  .500 is miraculous in and of itself.

So when talking about the NBA's Coach of the Month award for November, Fernandez should be on a short list. Strictly based on the lack of talent on his roster and number of injuries his team has persevered through, Fernandez is a strong candidate.

So while Fernandez was listed as a finalist, he ultimately did not win the award. The winner, is a familiar name to Nets fans.

His team has the best record in the NBA and in his second opportunity as a head coach, he's maximizing the potential of his team.

That man, Kenny Atkinson, is more than deserving of the honor.

So while it's likely that Fernandez will be in the hunt for Coach of the Month and potentially Coach of the Year honors, his time hasn't come yet.

Perhaps, Atkinson will be the magic elixir to help the Cavaliers get back to their first finals since LeBron James left the team after the 2018 NBA finals.

Nets run out of magic vs Orlando, three-game win streak snapped

Chalk one up for those rooting for the Nets to get a top draft pick. Brooklyn was outplayed during Friday night's 123-100 loss versus Orlando.

Jordi Fernandez's crew was riding a three-game winning streak into the game, but Orlando had their number for the second time this season.

Franz Wagner proved to be unstoppable with 28 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists. Shake Milton scored a career high 22 points, and Keon Johnson poured in 15.

The short-handed Nets couldn't pull another rabbit out of their hat. Orlando cruised to a relatively easy victory, but Brooklyn will get another shot Barclays, ,on Sunday in a matinee contest.

Friday's loss to the Magic was the second worst point differential of the year, second only to the 25-point losses suffered against Boston on 11/13 and Philly on 11/22.

Orlando's physicality is a difficult matchup for the Nets, but expect Fernandez to have his crew ready for another battle in the friendly confines of Barclays to put up a better showing.

Kevin Durant: 'I'm a Net for life'

Kevin Durant played 129 regular season games with the Brooklyn Nets.

When the going got tough, the weak got going. Durant initially requested a trade during the summer of 2022 only to rescind that request and watch his compadre Kyrie Irving leave ahead of the 2023 trade deadline.

When Durant had an opportunity to follow Irving and James Harden before him out the door from Brooklyn, he didn't bat an eye.

Durant's right-hand man, Rich Kleinman, was as instrumental as any party in revisiting an the earlier trade request and bringing the said trade to the finish line between Brooklyn and Phoenix.

Durant, Irving, and Harden arrived with championship expectations, but left with a whimper.

Now with Durant facing his former squad, it seems as though the surefire Hall of Famer is buttering up his former franchise.

Should Durant come back and finish the championship quest he started in Brooklyn later on in his career, he can perhaps be considered a Net for life.

Until then, Durant's words hold no water in Nets World.

Ben Simmons does the unthinkable in nail biter versus Hornets

You'd have to go back to February 10, 2024, to find the last time Ben Simmons reached double figures in scoring.

That rare feat was achieved during Tuesday night's NBA Cup  116-115 win over Charlotte. Simmons tallied 10 points and 8 rebounds.

The moment that perhaps sparked Ben Simmons scoring outburst was a dust-up with Brandon Miller. This lit a competitive fire in Simmons that has been absent all season.

It's unlikely that Simmons' scoring prowess continues against his old club in Philadelphia Friday night, but at least he showed a small sign of life and vigor for one of the few times this season with the Brooklyn Nets.

Nets look like chumps in 139-114 loss to defending champs

The Brooklyn Nets have been a competitive basketball team throughout the early part of the NBA season.

That was not the case at Barclays Center against the defending champion Boston Celtics on Wednesday night.

Brooklyn's 25-point defeat was its most lopsided of the season.

Jayson Tatum led the way for the Celtics with 36 points and 10 assists, while Zaire Williams paced the Nets with 26 points.

The Celtics shot a scorching hot 22-46 from long range as the Nets put up very little defensive resistance

Boston was coming off an Emirates NBA Cup loss on Tuesday night to the short-handed Hawks, and Joe Mazzulla's club clearly played with a purpose.

Brooklyn led by 13 points early, but Boston turned the tide to lead by as many as 30 points.

The Nets will have Thursday off before traveling to MSG to face the Knicks on Friday night.

NBA 2K25 Review: MY GM mode delivers, gameplay fails

The NBA 2K franchise has lost its way over the years. From clunky gameplay, to greedy VC credits, some fans have become disillusioned with the direction of the once great basketball video game franchise.

Now, when I sat down to play NBA 2K25, I tempered my expectations. Online match play had a whole host of issues in the past year's version as timing up the jump shot meter became impossible with even the smallest amount of lag.

With the highest internet speeds available in my area, there should have been ample bandwidth and connection to produce a quality online experience.

So, when I cracked into NBA 2k25, I was somewhat surprised that the gameplay and shot meter had changed a bit. At first blush, I thought that this was an improvement to the shooting mechanics of the game.

Upon closer examination, I was able to determine that this year's gameplay is actually even more difficult to produce a quality jump shot that is timed properly. Even making moves to the basket, including euros and step throughs are even more difficult with a combination of using the right thumbstick and left thumbstick.

There is no tutorial on the new gameplay features and tweaks, it just leaves you up to practice mode to kind of experiment with what works and what doesn't.

Overall, despite a mini-overhaul of gameplay and shooting mechanics, this year's version is actually worse than 2k24 and its predecessors.

As far as the Eras Play is concerned, other than the fact at playing as New Jersey Nets I saw a fan with a, "I ❤️ Brooklyn sign" in the stands behind the basket, it was quite enjoyable to hop into a time machine.

The My GM mode within Eras Play is worth the price of admission. Every minute detail is controllable and building a legitimate contender year in and year out comes with the very realistic obstacles and hurdles of salary cap restrictions, disgruntled players and pressure from ownership and coaching staff to make it work.

There was some redundancy in star players asking about being involved in personnel decisions as they envisioned a role after their playing career was over to join a team's front office or ownership group.

In four seasons in MY GM mode and starting with the current Nets roster, I was able to through trade to win two championships in that span. Both times, the team snuck in as the final play-in team and breezed through relatively easily to a title. Perhaps some of the deadline moves that I made turned the tide of what were two lost seasons, including my most recent season where the star player asked out and the team started 7-25.

Unless you relented and allowed that star player some roster input, it resulted in either a disgruntled player or a trade request. I guess in today's NBA it is not that far from the truth, but there was not a lot of different dialogue or interactions with players, coaches, and the chairman that I remember.

I don't think there were ever press questions or press conferences as in past years where you would answer the media's inquiries.

Overall, the game is quite enjoyable, but It's better managing games through my GM and simulation then actually jumping in and playing them.

Gameplay: 6️⃣.8️⃣

MY GM: 8️⃣.8️⃣

Overall score: 7️⃣.6️⃣

NBA Commissioner reveals his choice for basketball GOAT

Adam Silver is a man of a few words. He's a players commissioner and has done everything in his power to appease superstar players in the league.

So when he was pressed by reporters to give his thoughts on who the greatest basketball player of all time is, it was a bit surprising that he was so forthright in his opinion.

Silver revealed that Michael Jordan is indeed the GOAT of the NBA.

This is not a shocking revelation by any stretch despite LeBron James building a very strong case.

Usually the commissioner is political in his answers, but this admission will certainly stir up conversation and debate among NBA fans and within NBA circles.

NBA pundit thinks 'Nets best option' for Bucks, Giannis

Bill Simmons has made a career of predicting NBA basketball moves.

He's had some hits and plenty of misses.

In his latest podcast on The Ringer, Simmons insists that Giannis Antetokounmpo to Brooklyn is a home run for both sides.

The Nets plethora of draft picks, valuable veterans, and Ben Simmons' expiring deal might be enticing enough for Milwaukee to pull the plug on a disastrous 2-8 campaign. Giannis and Dame Lillard are clearly not working together.

Sean Marks would have to think long and hard as to whether Giannis fits Brooklyn's timeline and if his injury history and penchant for getting coaches fired is a great fit for the Nets franchise.

Nets playoff odds alarmingly high for those rooting for a tank job

The good news is, according to the latest playoff odds: the Brooklyn Nets are extremely likely to make the playoffs.

The bad news for the Nets tankers based on the latest playoff odds: the Brooklyn Nets are extremely likely to make the playoffs.

According to basketball reference, the Nets have an 80% chance at making the 2025 NBA playoffs.

This comes on the heels of back-to-back, competitive road losses to two of the premier teams in the Eastern Conference in the Boston Celtics and the Cleveland Cavaliers .

While the sample size is minuscule at just 10 games, the Nets have shown signs under Jordi Fernandez. They are a true superstar away from being competitive in the Eastern Conference field.

After getting burned during a superstar chasing era, it appears that Sean Marks and the Nets brass is going to take a more patient approach and build through the draft and use existing valuable vets to create more cap space and increase the draft stock.

So while the fan base is split 50-50 on whether the Nets should truly tank and go for a top NBA draft lottery pick, as presently constituted through ten games, it appears the Nets will not be lying down for any team in the league and be competitive throughout this season.

Nets can't make the same mistake with Fernandez that they made with Atkinson

The Brooklyn Nets have a great coach in Jordi Fernandez. They had a terrific coach from 2016 to 2019 in Kenny Atkinson.

Due to a mass influx of superstars, including Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant, they parted ways with their head coach back in 2019 to acquiesce to the stars' demands.

Both of those stars, along with James Harden, left the Nets at the altar and it's clear five years after the Nets made a coaching change, that it was the wrong decision.

Jacque Vaughn took over for Atkinson at the end of 2019 and through the NBA bubble season during COVID-19.

Then, Sean Marks had the bright idea of hiring his former teammate with no head coaching experience whatsoever in Steve Nash.

That, along with a bunch of internal dysfunction and lack of commitment from supposed leaders, led to a talented Nets roster failing to win a single Atlantic Division crown, Eastern Conference crown or NBA title.

Now, the Nets are in an early similar position to where they were with Atkinson in 2016. Brooklyn is a gritty, never say die team that is making the most out of its talent with a competent and tough-nosed head coach.

Sound familiar?

Brooklyn's rebuild looks to be more of a retooling as Fernandez is fast tracking success at an overachieving 4-5 record. Many NBA pundits and even Nets fans were anticipating or even rooting for a tank season where the Nets would at worst land a top five NBA Draft Lottery pick.

That scenario is very much on the table since Brooklyn started 13-10 last year with Jacque Vaughn in his second stint as head coach before being fired at the end of last year.

The lesson learned here is when an organization hands over the keys to a star player, that player does not have the long-term interest of the team or the franchise at hand.

The Nets bent over backwards to please Irving, Durant and Harden and have nothing to show for it.

Now that another coach killer in Giannis Antetokounmpo is disenfranchised with the direction of the Bucks under Doc Rivers, the Nets need to tread lightly.

The Nets have been listed among the top landing spots for the Greek Freak, but the soon to be 30 year-old with an injury history, certainly presents some risks.

Marks and company cannot derail what looks to be a promising retooling of the franchise just to please another superstar player.

So while adding Antetokounmpo to the current mix in Brooklyn would be enticing, the front office and ownership brass needs to ensure that the plan is clear for Fernandez to have as much runway as possible to build a winner in the borough.

Tank you very much, Nets lose OT battle in Boston

Not many NBA fans or sports handicappers had Friday night's game between the Brooklyn Nets and Boston Celtics at TD Garden going into overtime.

Jordi Fernandez and crew pushed Joe Mazzulla, Jayson Tatum and company to the brink of defeat.

In fact, Brooklyn led from the open tip until 4:24 left in the 4th quarter of play.

Tatum led the way for Boston with 33 and Cam Thomas paced the Nets with 31.

The defending champions took all they could handle and body blow after body blow before letting their talent and superstars take over late.

Dorian Finney- Smith played terrific defense on the final play of regulation as Tatum's desperation three sailed wide of the rim to send the game to the extra session.

In overtime, Brooklyn fell 108-104. The Nets  should not hang their heads.

This was supposed to be a year where the Nets would be in the hunt for top picks in the NBA Draft Lottery, but it appears that Fernandez will not allow this team to give up, no matter what players are on the floor.

The Nets finding their leader of the future along the sidelines is a major development for this franchise and an attractive selling point for prospective free agents and for trade targets down the road.

So while some will be disappointed by a hard-fought loss in Boston, the Nets aspirations to get into the NBA Draft Lottery may not be entirely dead.
